Govortsova stuns Vekic , Maria-Teresa Floors reigning champ Irina Begu at Tashkent Open

September 11 : Unseeded Olga Govortsova of Belarus stunned fourth seed and last year’s finalist Donna Vekic of Croatia , Spaniard Maria -Teresa Torro Flor ousted Reigning champ and sixth seeded Irina -Camelia Begu of Romania to enter the quarterfinals of the 15th edition of the Tashkent Open being played at the Olympic Tennis Complex.

Top seeded Bojana Jovanovski of Serbia , Fifth seeded Alexandra Cadantu , seventh Seeded Galina Voskoboeva of Kazakhstan , along with unseeded Mandy Minella of Luxembourg , and Nastassja Burnett of Italy were the other players to make it to the last eight.

In the second round matches played today 113th ranked Olga Govortsova of Belarus took 1 hour 28 minutes to dispose of last year’s finalist and fourth seeded Croat junior Donna Vekic 7-6(4),6-3 to make her first quarterfinal appearance of the Tour this year . Little known 86th ranked Spaniard Maria- Teresa Torro Flor came back from being 0-3 down in the second set to shock reigning champion Irina- Camelia Begu of Romania 6-1,7- 5 in 1 hour and 16 minutes

In one of the best contested matches of the day third seeded Yvonne Meusburger quelled the challenge of former top 30 player Petra Cetkovska of Czech Republic 7-5,6-4 in 1 hour 39 minutes .

In the longest matches of the day between unseeded players Mandy Minella of Luxembourg edged out Vesna Dolonc of Serbia 4-6,6-4,6-3 in 2 hours and 14 minutes , while Italian teen Nastajja Burnett scraped past a fighting Japanese qualifier Risa Ozaki 6-4,3-6,7-6 (4) in 2 hous and 29 minutes

Amongst the remaining seeds fifth seeded Alexandra Cadantu outplayed Nadiya Kichenok of Ukraine 6-1,6-3 in 1 hour and 19 minutes , while Seventh seeded and 77th ranked Galina Voskoboeva of Kazakhstan proved too strong for Julia Glushko of Israel registering a convincing 6-3,6-1 win in just over a hour.

I’ve been coming to Tashkent since I was 15 , I didn’t know Donna and have not seen her play , I needed to play my game , I knew I have to be aggressive and played that way said, Govortsova after the match.

In the first set both Govortsova and Vekic broke each other twice forcing a tiebreak, , in the tiebreak too both players played close, until Govortsova used her experience to accelerate the speed of the match and take the set at 7-6(4). In the fast paced second set Govortsova broke Vekic in the 8th game to take the set 6-3 and grab a place in the last eight

Spaniard Maria- Teresa Torro Flor who made it to the second quarterfinal of the tour event reaching the last eight at Bogota early in the year started strongly against the reigning champion Begu breaking her twice in the 4th and the 6th game and racing to a 6-1 win .

In the second set Begu seemed to find her rhythm and raced to 3-0 lead , but the Spaniard dug on , Begu just won a poor 45% points on her serves in the second set after being broken in the 5th ,7th ,9th and 11th games in the second set after breaking the Spaniard thrice . Torro Flor held on to the 12th game to score a 7-5 win in 1 hour and 16 minutes.

I knew she Begu would be under pressure to defend championship but I remained focused on the match , I put a lot of balls in, she also made lot of mistakes . In the second set I became a Little nervous a went down 0-3, but regained composure and started playing freely ’ said Maria after her upset win
In a high quality match third seeded Yvonne Meusburger quelled the challenge of former top 30 player Petra Cetkovska of Czech Republic 7-5,6-4 in 1 hour 39 minutes.

For me Petra is sure top 30 player, today was a mental match and I was mentally stronger today , said the third seed Yvonne Meusburger after her win
