Little known 172nd ranked Nastassja Burnett from Rome, Italy ousted second seeded and 67th ranked Lesia Tsurenko of Ukraine 7-6(4),6-4 in a 1 hour 47 minute battle.
In match which saw as many as 19 double faults from both players Burnett raced to a 3-1 lead in the first set , but the experienced Tsurenko came back to take 4 games in a row and go up 5-3. Burnett held on to her 9th game and broke Tsurenko on love to claim the 10th game and level scores at 5-5. Both held on to force a tiebreak , in which the young Italian put across three forehand winners at 4-4 to claim the set.

This was Burnett’s second top 75 scalp this season , earlier this year she had put out Alize Cornet at Rome

I was surprised that I was in the main draw here as the last accepted player , and a bigger surprise to win today against Tsurenko . I came into the match with nothing to lose and was relaxed and played my game . In both sets I was dominating in the early part of the match , but Tsurenko kept pressuring me midway and the match got closer , but I decided to play my game and keep going for my shots said Burnett after the match.

I missed two match points in the 9th game as I was feeling a little nervous and was in hurry to finish the match ,but on the third match point I settled down a bit calmed my nerves and clinched the issue , I can’t think about what happened then , but will settle down and think of how not to repeat the same mistakes again she added.

Winner of the tour event at Bad Gastein and third seeded here Yvonne Meusburger of Austria survived some anxious moments to score a 2-6,6-2,6-1 win over Hungary’s Timea Babos in a tough first round encounter marked by some brilliant rallies.

This is the first time that Played against her it was a tough opener, It’s always great to win the first round . I’m very happy that I won the very first time that I have played at Tashkent, I like the conditions here , it was a close match , I was playing short in the first set and finding it tough to get into the match . In the 2nd and the 3rd set I started playing a little longer and got better. I started attacking her second serve and that helped me quite a bit.
I’ll try to focus on the every round , , But after my win I feel more confident. I like the atmosphere here ,though I prefer clay I like the courts here and enjoying it and plan to stay here as long as possible said Yvonne after her match .
