Irina -Camelia Begu lifts Tashkent Open title

Tashkent ,September 15: Giant Killer Irina -Camelia Begu of Romania brought out all her experience to score a 6-4, 6-4 win over Teenager Dona Vekic of Croatia and lift her first ever career singles title at the 14th edition of Tashkent Open WTA Tennis Championships

Begu who reached two finals at Marbella and Budapest in 2011 , scored a convincing 6-4,6-4 in a match lasting 1hour .20 mins to win the top prize of $37000 and importantly 280 WTA points .

In the first set Begu played Intelligent tennis to break a tired looking Vekic in the 7th game , Begu served 4 aces in the first set . In the second set Begu broke Vekic in the very first game and held her serves to race to a 4-2 lead, but Vekic brought out her last reserves in the 8th game after being down 40-15 to hit some fluent cross court winners and level scores at 4-4.

The seasoned Begu broke immediately in the 9th game mixing speed and length to break the Croat qualifier and go up 5-4, Begu served intelligently to hold the 10th game and raised her hands and let out a huge cry to herald the new winner of the event

It feels great to win a title , I’ll take back sweet memories from Tashkent , said the 22 year Begu currently ranked 87 . I’m glad I made a decision to play the event at the last moment , and will surely comeback to defend my title, she added.

My service was what got me through , said Begu who had a high 74% first serves going for her . Donna played very well and I was happy to break her in both sets , said Begu .

I was a little worried when Donna came back from 2-4 to level scores at 4-4 in the second set , but I managed to break her immediately to take a 5-4 lead and then held on to my serve and win the set , Begu admitted after the match.

On the trademark Chapan awarded to the winner here annually, Begu said I saw it when Sorena Cirstea won the title here, but now I have one of my own , it will be special for me , added Begu who came back from the brink of defeat against the eighth seeded Galina Voskoboeva earlier at the event

For the sixteen year old crowd favorite here today Vekic, it was a disappointing performance . I was ready for this final , but Irina played very well , she deserved to win today she said after the match .

I’m happy that I had a good week , but a little disappointed of not being able to win the title after coming close , but I will come back , she added. The event has brought me a lot of experience and will surely help me play the Tour events now and great for my future , said Vekic

I had my chances in the second set I broke Irina and leveled scores at 4-4 , but hurried a little bit on my serve and was broken, admitted Vekic

Answering question about being one of the youngest player on the tour to do well in the last 5 years , Vekic said New generations of players will keep coming all the time , and someone younger will keep coming on the scene frequently in the coming years.

Vekic got $19000 her highest prize money purse till date and 200 points which will propel her into the top 135 ranking bracket .


The prizes were given away at the hands of the Mayor of Tashkent Rakhmonbek Usmanov, and the president of the National Olympic committee Malik Babaev , The minster of Sports and Culture Kuziev Tursunali Karimovich , Tournament Director S Uthrapathy and WTA Supervisor Martina Lutkova were present on the occasion
