Interview with Lesia Tsurenko

11 September 2014

Lesia Tsurenko of Ukraine is turning out to the giant killer at the Tashkent Open in 2014. Having going through the grind of qualifying where she has won four matches on trot and made it to the quarterfinals here. She ousted 2012 winner and second seeded Irina- Camelia Begu of Romania in close 3 sets.

Tsurenko who aims to get into the top 100 bracket by the end of this year spoke to Sunder Iyer of the Tashkent Open Media team.

Well done for  a formidable win, your fourth in a row and you look fresh as ever?

Lesia ; Thanks , actually I'm happy with the way I'm stroking the ball , the courts are perfect for my game and the speed . I was bit tired yesterday but I'm feeling fitter and have enough energy to go into the next round of matches.

Last year   the winner of the event here Bojana Jovanovski came through the qualifiers , you seem to be following her ?

Lesia : Yes Bojana has thrown up a good example of how one should hang in and play as many matches you can and win. I think my aim is to do the same , I believe one should be thinking if one doesn't want to win the tournament why play at all  .

Its great achievement considering all that is going around in your mind in relation with your nation ?

Lesia : I'm quite concerned with the situation in my country , though we are staying in a safe place , I feel worried about by relatives and friends. I pray every day for them to be safe  I always have a thought in my mind about their well being , I love my country and want to keep living there . I just hope everything will be fine and there will be no war . My job is to play tennis but I can't help thinking about my loved ones.

You have had better results this year in spite the pressure ?

Lesia: I've improved mentally , and yes I have had a good year till now I'm feeling stronger  physically and game wise  . I have learnt to enjoy tennis and happy being on the court . " I have realized it not about winning but to have fun and enjoy every bit on the court" . This attitude is doing me good.

Your plans for the rest of the year and any goals you have set ?

Lesia: I want to finish in the top 100 by the end of the year , and start with main draw of the Australian Open .   I have no points to lose and  I will be gaining points now on , this will all help.
