9 September 2013

By Tashkent Media Team

172nd ranked Nastassja Burnett was surprised to be in the main draw at the Tashkent Open this year , having entered the event she was expecting to be in the qualifiers , but made it into the main draw as the last accepted player. She was double surprised to see herself creating the first upset of the event knocking out second seeded and 61st ranked Lesia Tsurenko of Ukraine in straight sets.
Nastassja spoke to the Tashkent Open Media team after her win today.

About the match today

I was surprised that I was the last accepted player in the main draw , and a bigger surprise to win today against Tsurenko.

I came into the match having nothing to lose and was relaxed and played my game . In both sets I was dominating in the early part of the match , but Tsurenko kept pressuring me midway and the match got closer , but I decided to play my game and kept going for my shots.

You missed two match points did you panic on your third

I missed two match points in the 9th game as I was feeling a little nervous and was in hurry to finish the match ,but on the third match point I settled down a bit calmed my nerves and clinched the issue , I can’t think about what happened then , but will settle down and think of how not to repeat the same mistakes again.

Thoughts on graduating onto the WTA Tour

It’s my second year on the tour after playing on the ITF circuit where I did reasonably well winning 6 different events, it has been tough journey to play on the tour but the motivation is bigger and its a good challenge for someone like me. Tsurenko is my second top 70 scalp this year , the biggest win for me this year has been against Alize Cornet at Rome.

Resurgence of Italian Women’s tennis and how it has helped you

At this moment Italian Women’s Tennis is at the best with players like Errani, Vinci, Schiavone, Knapp, Penetta , Camila in Top 100 , this has given players like me a great motivation and positive competition and a lot to prove. Personally I want to be there and will work hard to show that I’ll be also there to share my name with these elite players sooner or later.
