Interview of the day – Galina Voskoboeva

By Sunder Iyer
On behalf of the Tashkent Open Media Team

Galina Voskoboeva is pretty face on the WTA tour , a regular at the Tashkent Open, Galina seeded eighth at this year’s event is happy to have broken the “ Tashkent Jinx” as she terms it. Making it to round two after a three set win over Nueza Silva she spoke to the media team.

On breaking the jinx?
Galina:
Winning the first round here is pretty satisfying for me, but I’m happier to have broken the Tashkent jinx , where I have lost all the three times I’ve played so far . I’ve had a tradition of playing three sets but always lost, but I feel that I’ve conquered myself mentally here.

On the draw, and her prediction on how far she’ll go here ?
Galina:
Frankly I’ve not yet seen the draw, my coach told me something but I really didn’t notice it. I will check it now, I’m taking one match at a time. My first priority was to win the first round.

On looking fitter and trimmer?
Galina:
Yes, thanks it’s true I’ve lost some weight and looking trimmer. I’ve not done anything on purpose, but see life’s very hard, a lot of hard work has gone in and that’s probably the reason

Was the year going on as per her plans?
Galina:
Yes the first half was going as per plan and I also did well , I started the year well reaching the 3rd round at Australian Open, I played well on clay too, and did well at French Open where I beat Sania Mirza ranked higher , reached last 8 at Warsaw. Suddenly I felt I lost momentum and things seemed to go wrong.

What happened, any injuries or any other reasons?
Galina:
Yes probably I made mistakes in my preparations, I thought I was ready for tournaments, but needed to practice more. I made some wrong decisions, but know I’m okay that I realized soon, still there is along time for the year to go.

We took a break and worked on the game , I’m sure that the remaining year will see me back on track.

You’re so cool and calm off court, but when you are on courts you are a different person and more temperamental?
Galina:
Laughs, Yes true, you see that in this part of the world we are temperamental and emotional people and this shows off, but true I’m working very hard to improve my temperament and be cool on the courts.

On moving nationality?
Galina:
Yes, I was born in Russia, but now playing for Kazakhstan, but because of my move I’m having more opportunities to represent the country at Team events like the Fed Cup. Kazakhstan has accepted me and I truly would like to say I’m overwhelmed by their hospitality
